Learning to Hear God’s Voice
in a Noisy World

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Matthew 11:15
If you’re anything like me, your world is filled with noise. We live in a world that loves to shout! Social media screams for attention. Society tries to tell us what and who we should be and what we should be doing. Even our own inner critic can drown out truth with lies about who we are and what we’re worth. The noise is constant and often convincing.
The Competing Voices Around Us
We’re women with responsibilities, families, relationships, dreams, and distractions. Amid all the hustle , it’s easy to wonder: How can I possibly hear God’s voice in the middle of all this?
The truth is God is speaking. He always has been. But sometimes, we’ve simply turned the volume up so loud in everything else that we can’t hear His gentle whisper. From social media notifications to demanding careers and family responsibilities, it can feel impossible to discern God’s still small voice amidst the chaos, but as Christian women, hearing God’s voice is essential for navigating life’s challenges and fulfilling His purpose for us.
Jesus reminds us in John 10:27: “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”
The question isn’t whether God speaks; it’s whether we have created the space to listen. How do we tune out the noise and truly connect with our Creator?
The Importance of Quiet Time
In 1 Kings 19, Elijah didn’t hear God in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. He heard Him in a still, small voice. That same stillness is available to us when we step away form the noise and into His presence.
Psalm 46: 10 tells us, “Be still, and know that I Am God.” This verse isn’t just a nice sentiment; it’s a directive. God often speaks in the quiet moments, when we intentionally set aside distractions and create space just for Him. Think of it like trying to hear a whisper in a crowded room. you need to find a quiet corner to truly listen!
You don’t need a perfect prayer closet or an hour-long devotional time to find quiet. Start with what you have. Maybe it’s ten minutes before the kids wake up, five minutes in the car before going into work, or a few minutes at night when the house finally calms. It’s not about the length of time, but the intentionality of your heart.
Here are a few simple ways to quiet the noise and tune into God’s voice:
- Start your day with HIm: Before reaching for your phone, reach for Him. Whether it’s a short greeting or even a quick prayer when you wake up, take a few minutes just for you and God.
- Use Scripture as a doorway: God often speaks through HIs Word. Try reading one verse slowly and asking, “God, what are you saying to me here?”
- Practice holy stillness. Set a timer for five minutes. Sit quietly. Don’t talk, just be. Let your heart listen.
- Journal your prayers and thoughts. Writing can help you discern God’s voice over your own.
- Turn down the world’s volume. Consider taking short breaks from media, news, or anything that floods your mind. Make room for God’s truth to rise above the noise.
God’s Voice Sounds Like Love and Truth
When you do hear God- and you will!- it won’t sound like guilt, pressure, or shame. His voice always reflects His character: faithful, loving, and kind.
Hearing God’s voice isn’t about earning His favor. It’s about deepening our relationship with a God who already loves us unconditionally. God isn’t just speaking to you; He’s guiding you, cheering for you, and walking with you. He wants to be involved in every part of your life, not just the big moments, not just the hard moments.
Friend, you are not just another woman in a sea of noise. You are deeply loved, known, and pursued by a God who still speaks. He is not silent. He is not distant. He is near. And He delights in revealing His heart to you!
As we begin to create quiet spaces, lean into His Word, and prioritize His presence, we will find what our souls have longed for all along: His voice, steady and sure, whispering, “This is the way, walk in it ” (Isaiah 30:21).
Lord, help me to hear You above the noise. Teach me to slow down, to seek You first, and to trust Your still, faithful voice. Thank you for loving me, guiding me, and never giving up on me. Speak, Lord, Your daughter is listening. Amen
